Launching a Campaign for the Future
The Christopher Martin Memorial Campaign
In the 5 years since its founding, RADical Hope has surveyed thousands of young adults nationwide and consulted with experts across disciplines to create our flagship program, RADical Health. In the midst of a national mental health crisis, we are dedicated to meeting students where they are, equipping them with the vital resources and tools they need to strengthen peer connections, combat isolation, and cultivate resilience.
Already, we have fully funded and executed the program in over 30 colleges, professional sports teams, and community groups, reaching thousands of youth across the country. In the next 5 years, we are poised to change the trajectory of mental wellness for generations to come.
Pam and Phil Martin are proud to announce the Christopher Martin Memorial Campaign, dedicated to raising $5M and partnering with 100 colleges. With your support, we can continue to dismantle the barriers that hinder broader access to mental health support and usher in a brighter, more resilient world.
The Christopher W. Martin Award
Honoring MIKE WHALEN
The Christopher W. Martin Award honors those whose spirit of kindness, courage, grit, and vulnerability inspires hope in others each day. This year we recognize Mike Whalen, Director of Athletics at Wesleyan University, for his continued commitment to the well-being of his students at Wesleyan, and beyond.
Whalen has been a RADical Hope partner since 2020 and has played an instrumental role in helping to customize the RADical Health program for Wesleyan’s first year student-athletes. With his support, our emotional resilience building program has reached 450 student-athletes on campus. All the while Whalen has been a strong and vocal advocate, helping us grow awareness of the program at other schools, specifically in the NESCAC, and supporting them with implementation.
Mike Whalen has been a prominent figure in the world of collegiate athletics since his playing days at his alma mater, Wesleyan University. In 2012, he assumed the role of Athletic Director at Wesleyan, and prior to his tenure, he spent six years as the Head Football Coach at Williams College, where he achieved an impressive winning record of 38–10. In 2006, Whalen led the Williams team to an undefeated and untied 8–0 record, securing the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship. During his productive tenure at Wesleyan, he has overseen continual growth in donations, and was instrumental in the creation of a Director of Athletic Fundraising position. With receipts now annually topping $1 million, he has seen benefits from several major gifts including the funding of the FieldTurf playing surface and lighting at Citrin Field, locker room renovations, the Jones Family scoreboard that supports Jackson Field, ongoing upgrades to the swimming pool, as well as endowments for football, men’s ice hockey, field hockey, women’s soccer and women’s crew. Whalen’s contributions have built upon the school’s long-standing tradition of scholar-athlete excellence and his vision for Wesleyan Athletics carries well into the future – promising continued commitment to a student-centered athletics program with student well-being at the forefront.
