Special Guest Larry Fitzgerald Jr.

Larry Fitzgerald, Jr. is widely known for his accomplishments on the football field. He played 17 seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver with the Arizona Cardinals. Fitzgerald received numerous awards throughout his career, most notably being named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team, the pinnacle of NFL excellence, and the 2016 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, the League’s highest honor acknowledging charitable work. Although many recognize Fitzgerald for his impeccable hands on the field, it’s what he’s achieved off the field that he is most proud of. Fitzgerald’s accomplishments as a philanthropist, business leader, and investor have made an indelible impact. During his time in the NFL, Fitzgerald used his platform as a professional athlete to promote countless causes in the United States and beyond. In 2005, he founded The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation to create opportunities for young people in underserved communities to learn and thrive in safe and healthy environments, and to provide resources that help women, men, and families impacted by breast cancer. On the business side, Fitzgerald believes humility, consistency, and hard work are keys to long term success. He believes in the power of building the future through investments and entrepreneurship, and he is an investor in over 160 companies spanning various industries such as hospitality, sports, technology, real estate, fintech, and more. Fitzgerald serves on the boards of directors for Tempus Ex Machina, a data and technology company that is ushering unprecedented levels of insight into the sports and entertainment industries, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, where he is advising the company on a multi-year strategic transformation. Fitzgerald holds ownership in the Rajasthan Royals cricket team and has also worked extensively with PGA Reach to increase diversity in the game of golf. He currently serves as Executive Chairman of the Super Bowl LVII Host Committee, hosts the Let’s Go! Podcast with Tom Brady and Jim Gray, and is an analyst for ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown. Fitzgerald has worn many hats, from professional athlete to philanthropist, entrepreneur, investor, and world traveler. He regularly speaks to groups ranging from youth camps to business executives about the impact of mindset, mentorship, perseverance, and community service. The Christopher W. Martin Award

Honoring Linda Mills

Vice Chancellor and Senior Vice Provost for Global Programs & University Life, New York University

The Christopher W. Martin Award honors an individual whose spirit of kindness, courage, grit, and vulnerability inspires hope in others each day. This year we recognize Linda Mills for her leadership and advocacy for student mental health for more than two decades. Shortly after the tragedy of September 11th , 2001, New York University experienced seven suicides in the span of several months. As Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at the time, Dr. Mills searched the country university-based mental health best practices only to learn that, for the most part, higher education left suicide prevention up to their counseling centers. After extensive research, Mills created what is thought to be the first dedicated 24/7 university hotline supported by licensed professionals. In addition, she hired an on-call team of social workers to respond to emergencies, diversified counseling staff to support all students in need of services and created a Broadway-style ‘NYU Reality Show’ that destigmatized counseling and publicized how to get help. Since the launch of the NYU hotline in the summer of 2004, it has received over 250,000 calls from students, their families, faculty and staff. NYU hotline counselors have intervened in high risk, life-saving situations over 2800 times. NYU continues to set the “gold” standard for college mental health. In 2020, Mills partnered with RADical Hope to create Radical Health, a groundbreaking program to provide students with fundamental skills and resources to strengthen connections and build resilience so they’re equipped to cope before they reach a crisis point. RADical Health was inspired by Chris Martin’s struggle as a college junior to engage and connect with his peers and his own campus resources. After successful pilots at NYU and other schools, RADical Hope began to scale the program nationally and will reach over 10,000 students this year on 25 campuses. Linda Mills continues to support the foundation’s leadership as the program grows its impact and NYU remains an active partner.

Mills is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. Her first feature documentary, Auf Wiedersehen: ‘Til We Meet Again (2010, with Brian Dilg), tells the story of her mother’s escape from Vienna when she was 14. The film debuted at the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival, where it earned the runner-up audience award, and went on to seven other festivals, including in Philadelphia, Israel, Minneapolis, and Vienna. Mills is the Lisa Ellen Goldberg professor at NYU and the Vice Chancellor for Global Programs and University Life.
